No Aircraft Chocks, No safety cones, Just automation

Over the years, technology has revolutionized our perspective of the world. Technology has created amazing tools and resources, putting each person’s most useful information at their fingertips. With all of these revolutions, technology has also made our lives easier, faster, better… and more. Every human who lives in the modern world has experienced how technology has changed their life.

“Every once in a while, a new technology, an old platform, and a big idea turn into an innovation.”                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               Dean Kamen.

The Aviation sector started to adopt its revolutionized technology modernization after the US airline deregulation act in 1978. The ease of travel became one of the reasons why passengers choose regular travel patterns and technology made things easier to achieve fastest, quickest, reliable, resourceful, easiest and advanced systems to fulfill passenger needs.

While the technology spread across the aviation industry and the propeller aircrafts start to replace by jet engines, the new machines took part in the loading-unloading process to assist with the quick turnaround of the jet aircrafts. Not limited to that, state of art baggage handling systems, fly by wire concept, integrated online bookings, built-in aircraft communication instruments and live flight tracking radar can be rate as few of the major milestones in the revolutionized aviation industry.

This article rolls out a significant, yet no other airport has implemented but it completes a full process of automation where the stakeholders can benefit saves time and utilize manpower & most importantly it leads to gain reputation and the recognition by airport council international (ACI) to promote professional excellence in airport management and operations.

To fulfill the concept of “Standalone parking bay”, let me introduce the automated aircraft chocks and safety cones. The built-in aircraft chocks automatically lift underground once the aircraft comes to a complete stop at the bay. Then followed by the safety cones start rising up above the ground from the designated spots. The chocks and cones either can be sensor activate or remote-controlled bearing the same width, height, and length. The prime objective is to embrace the technology as a safety precaution where there are chances of aircraft roll back after break release. Moving further, a great addition to swift passenger disembarkation process for hub & spoke model airports in the world.

Safety cones can be rubber or plastic which goes underground when not necessary. Similar to a remote-controlled rising bollard at security gates, these posts can be the same height as in actual safety cones and placed them right around the sharp edges of the aircraft. It is required to be prepared for more posts at the bay as airline requirements can be different depending on the airline.

This concept can be well executed despite the different types of aircraft handles at each parking bay prioritizing the measurements and aircraft types on the bay and evaluate the size of the chock and the right point of safety cones which need. Today the technology is widespread where logistic needs for such a device can be made which fits different types of aircraft and fix down at the pit level. Also, the rising bollard not necessary to be fully underground nor it has to be metal finished. Thinking further, a retractable rising plastic bollard can be made out of single used plastic as an environmental consideration fact.

So, to best conclude, “the self-parking stand” or “stand-alone parking bay” concept is roll-out for discussions by the authorities and I would like to witness one the day an aircraft is being marshaled by a drone to the parking stand, lift the automated chocks and safety cones upon complete stop& end the process with the sensor-controlled aero bridge connects directly to the aircraft door for smooth disembarkation.
